Food for ketosis
How to use Purition

The Keto diet

A Ketogenic diet is a more extreme version of a real food low-carb diet, which keeps carbohydrate intake below 20-50g per day depending on the individual. If the body is not getting energy from carbohydrate (glucose) it will naturally start to transfer energy stored in the food you eat and transfer body fat to energy (ketones) that your body can use instead of glucose. This is referred to as being in ketosis and is a completely natural function that happens every night whilst you are sleeping.

Purition is food - not a medical product or supplement. It should not be your sole source of nutrition.

Try Purition for breakfast daily for 14 days and experience the difference it can make to your health, fitness and weight management regime.

5:2 or 16:8 diets.

Ketosis is also one of the reasons the 5 to 2 diet (5:2 diet) or 16 to 8 diet (16:8 diet) works so well. These diets work by extending the time your body is using body fat for energy instead of food. The 16:8 diet refers to fasting for 16 hours in a 24 hour period and eating 3 meals within an 8 hour window. Using Purition for breakfast (or your first meal of the day) is a great way to approach the 16:8 diet. In the case of the ever popular 5:2 diet the idea is that you eat normally 5 days a week and then restrict calories to around 600 calories for two days per week. Purition is great for your 2 fasting days as you can have two shakes to keep you going during the day, ideal when you just don’t want to think about food. A quick shake in the morning and one later on makes those two fasting days just that little bit easier.

Lose Weight with Natural Whole Food

Purition offers a natural, healthy way to lose weight with whole food nutrition. It is made of nutrient-densenuts and seeds and a bit of whey for additional protein. Nothing artificial, no powders, and no added sugars, a perfect natural support for your Keto diet.Just the finest whole food ingredients chopped and blended for maximum healthy and natural nutrition.

Benefits of Purition.

Purition contributes to weight loss in several ways. First, the protein and fibre keep you feeling satisfied and full for hours, making it easier to avoid mid-meal snacks. That natural protein also makes your work-outs more effective by helping your muscles build and recover. And as Purition is extremely low in carbs and sugars (<1g), it helps to banish unwanted sugars from your diet.

Your glass of healthy.

For weight loss, you should have one or two shakes daily for breakfast and lunch, followed by a healthy, balanced dinner with a lot of non-starchy vegetables (those that are grown above ground) and a lean protein source.

With Purition, not only can you lose weight, you will eat more healthily. In addition to protein and fibre, Purition naturally contains healthy fats, minerals and vitamins all derived from natural whole foods including pumpkin seeds, chia seeds and more.
Quite simply, it’s a glass of healthy.

What is a 'Ketogenic diet'?

Also known as the keto diet, nutritional ketosis, low-carb, high fat (LCHF)

They're nothing new, as far back as the mid 1800s William Banting popularised it as a weight loss diet based on limiting the intake of carbohydrates especially those of a starchy or sugary nature, as did Dr. Atkins in the 1990s. Today, the keto diet now has on average over six times more searches than ‘paleo diet’ or ‘Atkins diet’ on Google.

*A note on fat burning* it’s actually a transfer of energy rather than fat going up in smoke!

On a keto diet starchy carbohydrates such as bread, rice and pasta are strictly off the menu, as are starchy root vegetables and all sugar including that found in tropical fruit. Instead, keto dieters should concentrate on unprocessed meat, fish, eggs, sees, nuts, natural dairy, leafy vegetables and low-sugar berries. In other word real food.

This means a substantial reduction in starchy and sugary carbohydrate consumption but contrary to what some opponents claim does not mean cutting out an entire food group. It is perfectly possible, and desirable, to achieve a state of ketosis whilst eating lots of colourful and leafy vegetables and low-sugar fruit like berries.

Having Purition by your side makes living a ‘keto lifestyle’ that little bit easier. Purition is a breakfast when you don’t have time to cook, lunch when you know low-carb options are not going to be available.

How do I know if I'm in nutritional ketosis?

You will have blood ketone levels of 0.5–3 millimoles per litre. Alternatively, people can use a breathalyzer to test for ketones in their breath, or they may use indicator strips to check their urinary levels.

Purition, with 4g of net carbs per serving, is an ideal breakfast on ketogenic diet, or when you don’t have time to cook later in the day.

Try Purition for breakfast daily for 14 days and experience the difference it can make to your Ketogenic diet.

SIDE EFFECTS (GOOD & BAD)

There is some contoversy surrounding the keto diet which some say is too restrictive however claims that it should exclude an entire food group ‘carbohydrates’ are inaccurate. We’ve listed the common side effects associated with being in ketosis, most are temporary and often cause flu like symptoms in the first few days.

Weight loss

Most research suggests that a ketogenic diet is effective for more weight loss. Therefore, you should expect to lose some weight when in ketosis. The results of a 2013 meta-analysis that examined the findings from several randomised controlled trials suggest that people following a ketogenic diet may lose more weight in the long-term than people following a low-fat diet.

According to a charity called the Public Health Collaboration, a total of 62 randomised controlled trials have been conducted to compare low carb to low fat approaches for weight loss. Of these, half (31) show a significantly greater weight loss in the low carb group, and none significantly favour the low fat group [2]. In addition, the results from our own Low Carb Program show that users have lost an average of 7.4kg (1 st 2 lbs) after one year [3].

Thirst

Ketosis may cause some people to feel thirstier than usual, which may occur as a side effect of water loss. However, high levels of ketones in the body can also lead to dehydration and an electrolyte imbalance. To avoid dehydration, drink plenty of water.

Muscle cramps and spasms

Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can cause muscle cramps. People following the ketogenic diet should ensure that they are getting enough electrolytes from the food and drink they consume. Electrolytes; calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium can be obtained from a varied diet.

Headaches

Headaches can occur as a result of consuming fewer carbohydrates, especially sugar. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can also cause headaches. Ketosis headaches normally pass within 1 or 2 days. See a doctor if headaches persist.

Fatigue and weakness

Fatigue is also a symptom of dehydration and micronutrient deficiencies. In the initial stages of a ketogenic diet, people may feel more tired or weaker than usual. This fatigue occurs as the body switches from mainly using glucose for energy from carbohydrates to mainly using fat for energy. After a few weeks on the diet, people generally report increased energy levels. If not, they should seek medical attention.

Stomach complaints

Making any dietary changes can raise the risk of stomach upset and other digestive complaints. To reduce the risk of experiencing stomach complaints, drink plenty of water, eat non-starchy vegetables and other fiber-rich foods (like Purition) to alleviate constipation and encourage a healthy gut.

Bad breath

Bad breath is the most common side effects of ketosis. This is because ketones leave the body through the breath as well as the urine. You may notice that your breath smells sweet or fruity. There is no way to reduce ketosis breath, but it may improve with time. Some people use sugar-free gum or brush their teeth several times per day.

Better focus and concentration

Initially, the ketogenic diet may cause headaches and concentration difficulties. However, these symptoms should fade within a day or so. People following a long-term ketogenic diet often report better clarity and focus, and some research supports this.

Summary

Those who wish to try a ketogenic diet should speak to their doctor first, as a very low carbohydrate diet may not be suitable for everyone. It is also vital to seek medical advice for persistent or severe symptoms of ketosis.

How should I use the shake for best weight loss results?

Have one shake a day for the first week (breakfast is good) so your body can adjust to the high fibre. Then if convenient have a shake for both breakfast and lunch, Monday - Friday.  In the evenings have a healthy, balanced home-cooked dinner that includes protein and as many vegetables - preferably colourful, leafy vegetables that are grown above ground - that you can manage.  Aim to eat just three meals a day and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Not only can you lose weight with this method, you can develop healthy eating habits that last a lifetime.

Yes, Purition is made from 100% wholefood natural ingredients so is perfectly safe if you’re an expectant mum or breastfeeding. In fact, Purition is a great way of making sure your own body is fuelled with essential nutrients whilst you deal with the demands of a newborn. It’s really simple and quick to prepare so even if you’re too tired to stand in the kitchen and cook a meal you can prepare a Purition shake in less than 30 seconds (and one handed if needs be!).

Is Purition Lactose Free?

The Original Purition is made with some whey protein isolate - which is super low in lactose.

To put it in context for you the average cup of tea with just a splash of milk will contain 160mg of lactose, there is less than 4mg of lactose in a serving of Original Purition. That's 15 times less lactose than you'd find in a cup of tea with a splash of milk! So it should not aggravate IBS or cause bloating.

Our Dairy Free options are 100% plant based and are completely lactose free.

Is Purition Gluten Free?

Yes all blends are certified gluten free and coeliac safe at less than 5 ppm.

Is Purition Certified Vegetarian or Vegan?

Yes, our Original blends, made with a little whey protein isolate, are certified Vegetarian.

Our Dairy Free Plant Based blends are made with Hemp or Pea, Rice and Hemp protein blend and are certified Vegan.

Where can I buy Purition?

Directly from us, the producers! Via our secure website, with free and fast shipping for all orders.

You can also find us in real life shops such as Planet Organic, Whole Foods Market, As Nature Intended, Boots and many more independent stores, gyms, fitness studios and coffee shops across the country.

How many servings are in each bag?

That depends, each 500g bag contains 10 x 50g servings or 12 x 40g servings, if using once a day, 5-6 times a week, that’s enough for two weeks. Many of our customers will add a half serving to non-sweetened full-fat Greek or natural yoghurt, porridge or even their regular green smoothies.

How should I store Purition?

Reseal the bag after use and keep it in a cool, dark cupboard. You don’t need to keep it in the fridge. Decanting it into a sealed jar or container, and keeping it on the side next to your blender is handy for easy access if using it everyday!

Can I try your flavours before I buy a full bag?

Absolutely, if you'd like to try before you buy we recommend the Discovery Box - This contains one serving of each blend (6 in total: With Almonds, Cocoa, Coconut, Macadamia and Vanilla, Pistachio, Strawberry) or 6 servings of Dairy Free Vegan blends (Raw Vegan Hemp x 1, Hemp with Chocolate x 2, Strawberry x 1, Blackcurrant x 1 and Vanilla x 1).

Each serving is one meal so you can really get a feel for what our Wholefood Nutrition shakes are all about!

How is Purition different from other protein shakes on the market?

That’s simple in two words REAL FOOD. Junk-free fitness food means your body recognises every ingredient. No gums, cheap fillers, thickeners, artificial anything or flavourings. Just simple wholesome food ingredients that support your “clean eating” and fitness goals.

How is Purition different from other meal replacement products on the market?

Again that’s simple in two words REAL FOOD. Purition is not a meal replacement or supplement, it’s made with  REAL FOOD - a meal in a glass. There is a BIG difference. Traditional “meal replacements” are made of sugar, artificial sweeteners, water, milk powder, thickeners, artificial flavourings and often chemically synthesised vitamins and minerals. They are industrial concoctions of highly refined ingredients that happen to contain very few calories precisely because they contain no real food.

Purition will never be a supplement, because it provides all the nutrition you need from real food ingredients (seeds & nuts) and is designed to only ever replace a meal, with a meal (albeit a perfectly balanced one!) We see Purition as the foundation of a healthy diet, not as a supplement to replace food but as a food to replace supplements.

How many scoops should I use?

Generally we say 4 scoops (40g) for women and 5 scoops (50g) for men. However ladies if 40g is not keeping you satisfied until your next meal use 50g.

Can I make my shake with water?

To be honest we don’t think this is the best way to make or to enjoy your Purition shake. The natural ingredients contained in our blends work far better with milk or your favourite milk alternative.

To enjoy Purition at its best: Blend 40g of Purition with 250ml cold milk/ nut milk and drink straight away.

How should I prepare my shake? Should I use a shaker or blender?

We recommend preparing Purition in a blender. Real Food does not dissolve so we say blend it for best results. Blending will create a thick, smooth, creamy shake in seconds and is a great opportunity to throw in some berries or greens for even more nutrients.

To enjoy Purition at its best: Blend 40g Purition with 250ml cold milk/ nut milk and drink straight away.

When should I drink my shake?

Once blended consume immediately, your shake will continue to thicken. If left for a few hours it will become porridge like and you’ll need a spoon thanks to all the fibre.

Results are about consistently great nutrition, not some magic window before or after exercise. Great nutrition is about what get’s eaten in a 24 hour period. If you plan on using before exercise you’ll want to consume it at least 1-2 hours before exercise. If you’re going to consume it after exercise wait until you get back home or the office so you can prepare it properly and most importantly enjoy.
